The game rose to fame in Europe and was then taken to other parts of the world when Europe traded and colonized other countries- including India. It was originally played in the 1900s as an evolution of Seven Card Stud. Texas Hold’em (the most popular version) was not even played the same way it is now. But, everyone seems to agree that it was influenced by a French game called ‘poque’.
